Functional Testing…
Functional testing is one of the most powerful tools we have for uncovering hidden imbalances.
Standard blood work often provides only a snapshot in time, while these advanced tests reveal deeper patterns- how your body is actually functioning, adapting, or where you may be struggling.
By using these insights, I can create highly personalised protocols that address the root cause of symptoms rather than just managing them.
Some of the Tests I Use….
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
HTMA is a non-invasive test that measures both mineral levels and toxic metals by analyzing a small hair sample. Unlike blood, which reflects moment-to-moment fluctuations, hair tissue shows mineral storage and metabolic patterns over several months.

HTMA Highlights:
Nutrient levels of essential minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium, sodium, and copper.
Toxic metal exposure (e.g., mercury, lead, aluminum, arsenic, cadmium).
Mineral ratios that provide insight into adrenal function, thyroid health, and blood sugar regulation.
For example:
〰️The calcium:phosphorus ratio gives clues about metabolic efficiency.
〰️The sodium:potassium ratio reflects adrenal resilience and stress response.
〰️The zinc:copper ratio is critical for mood stability, immune function, and estrogen balance.
Mineral imbalances can influence everything from PMS and PMDD to fatigue, mood disorders, and thyroid dysfunction (Watts, 1990). HTMA helps us identify patterns allowing for targeted replenishment and detox strategies.
GI Effects
The GI Effects® Comprehensive Stool Profile provides a deep evaluation of digestive function, inflammation, and the balance of the gut microbiome. Unlike standard stool testing, it combines biochemical markers with DNA analysis to give a full picture of how well your gut is working.

The gut isn’t just about digestion, it’s central to hormonal balance, brain health, and immunity. An imbalanced microbiome can alter oestrogen recycling (the estrobolome), increase inflammation, and contribute to mood instability and PMS/PMDD symptoms (Cryan et al., 2019; Baker et al., 2017).By utilising the GI Effects® test, we can understand where to support the gut. Low enzyme output, poor microbiome diversity, or hidden infections, we’ll create a targeted strategy to restore balance from the inside out.
This test looks at:
Digestive function – including elastase (pancreatic enzyme output), fat breakdown, and short-chain fatty acid production (essential for gut and colon health).
Microbiome balance – analysing beneficial bacteria, opportunistic species, and overall diversity, which are key for hormone metabolism, immune strength, and neurotransmitter balance.
Pathogens -detecting parasites, yeast (such as Candida), and harmful bacteria that can disrupt digestion and drive systemic inflammation.
Gut inflammation markers -such as calprotectin and lactoferrin, which indicate irritation, leaky gut, or inflammatory bowel activity.
Immune response. Including secretory IgA, the gut’s first line of defence against infections and environmental triggers.
Detoxification markers- such as beta-glucuronidase, which can indicate impaired oestrogen clearance and contribute to oestrogen dominance.
Adrenal Stress Profile
The Adrenal Stress Profile measures cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) and DHEA, taken at multiple points across the day. This provides a true picture of your HPA axis function (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal).

This test can help us determine if you are….
〰️In “high-alert” mode (excess cortisol) linked to anxiety, poor sleep, and weight gain.
〰️Experiencing slow adrenal output (low cortisol) associated with exhaustion, brain fog, and overwhelm.
Cortisol imbalances are linked to mood disorders, irregular cycles, and immune dysfunction (Miller et al., 2007).
By identifying your stress pattern, we can personalise nervous system support, adaptogens, and lifestyle strategies to restore balance and resilience.
NutrEval (Comprehensive Nutritional & Metabolic Assessment)
The NutrEval by Genova Diagnostics is one of the most in-depth evaluations of micronutrient status, oxidative stress, and metabolic function.
It combines organic acids testing, amino acid analysis, fatty acid profiling, and oxidative stress markers to provide a full-body nutrient map.

For women struggling with fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, or slow recovery, NutrEval pinpoints exact deficiencies or imbalances. Research shows that targeted nutrient repletion can improve mitochondrial efficiency, mood, and overall resilience (Kennedy, 2016).
This test looks at:
〰️Vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, antioxidants, and trace elements.
〰️Amino acids, the building blocks of neurotransmitters, hormones, and detox enzymes.
〰️Fatty acids, including omega-3 and omega-6 balance, which affect inflammation and cell membrane health.
〰️Mitochondrial function, assessing whether your energy production pathways are efficient.
〰️Oxidative stress and detox markers, revealing if your body is under cellular stress or has difficulty neutralising free radicals.
The DetoxiGenomic® Profile
The DetoxiGenomic® Profile is a genetic (SNP) test that identifies inherited variations in genes responsible for detoxification, methylation, and oxidative stress pathways.
It reveals genetic predispositions that may influence how efficiently your body handles toxins, hormones, and oxidative stress, highlighting where you may need extra support based on your genetics.

When Phase I is overactive but Phase II is sluggish, “toxic intermediates” can build up, causing headaches, PMS, chemical sensitivity, or skin issues. Research highlights the role of genetics and nutrients in detox capacity (Nebert & Dalton, 2006). This test allows us to design targeted detox support to keep pathways flowing optimally based on your genetic blueprint.
Key pathways assessed include
〰️Phase I detoxification genes (CYP family) initiate detoxification of hormones, environmental chemicals, and medications.
〰️Phase II conjugation genes (GST, COMT, NAT) – responsible for neutralising reactive intermediates and supporting hormone metabolism.
〰️Methylation genes (MTHFR, MTRR)- neurotransmitter balance, hormone metabolism, and DNA repair.
〰️Oxidative stress defense genes (SOD2, GPX1) affect your body’s antioxidant capacity.
A personalised Approach
Functional testing is not diagnostic. The goal is to gather as much information as possible and is most effective when it is strategically chosen based on your case history, symptoms, and health goals.
During your initial consultation, we’ll review your health timeline in depth and determine which tests will provide the clearest answers without unnecessary expense.
For some women, beginning with HTMA and GI Effects® may provide the key insights needed.
For others, especially where complex symptoms, long-term illness, or previous testing has left questions unanswered, comprehensive panels like NutrEval, Detox Profile, or genetic SNP analysis may be more appropriate.
By using the right combination of testing, we can….
〰️Clarify why symptoms are occurring (instead of guessing).
〰️Detect hidden stressors that standard labs often miss.
〰️Build a tailored, root-cause plan that addresses your body’s unique needs.
